Urban Forestry and Native Habitats

Talk by Dale Olivas

Carpinteria has a unique climate, natural plant and animal habitats, and a history of individuals dedicated to preserving natural resources. Olivas’s talk will include a wide-ranging discussion of native and non-native trees, tree safety and maintenance, defensible space, and the importance of Carpinteria habitat protection.

The Art of the Citrus Crate Label

Talk by Jim Campos, Ph.D.

Jim Campos, Carpinteria historian, educator, and former editor of the Citrus Label Society's newsletter, The Citrus Peal, will provide a historical overview of citrus crate labels related to Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. This illustrated history of one Carpinteria's most important industries over time will have ample time for talkback.

Avocado Land: The History of California's Avocado Industry

Talk by Rob Crisell

Crisell, author of California Avocados: A Delicious History, will discuss how avocados made their way to America and then to various California counties, how avocados won the "war on fat" in food, why Haas avocados are so popular, and the most important avocado recipes in history.

Ghost Hunting: The Adult Version of Hide and Seek

Talk by Earlene deMoulpied

Earlene deMoulpied, a seasoned paranormal investigator, will talk what is it really like to be a ghost hunter, including myths and misconceptions. Various types of paranormal activity will be discussed with ample time for talkback, questions, and answers.
