Talk by Amy Orozco

The town, the myth, the legend. If you’ve ever wondered if Carpinteria really is The World’s Safest Beach, which legend of Chismahoo is the real one, or if, indeed, Trader Joe’s is coming to town, you won’t want to miss Carpinteria Myths and Misinformation.

Rincon Point and the California Dream

Talk by Stephen Bates and Vince Burns

Bates and Burns, authors of Rincon Point, part of the Images of America series, will recount Rincon Point’s transformation from a scruffy, unpopulated beach into the legendary surf spot of today. They'll discuss the Chumash village of Shuku, the Mexican land grant Rancho El Rincon, the evolution of surfing, and some of the families who have shaped Rincon.

The Last Days in Vietnam

Talk facilitated by Peter Bie

April 30th marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. Carpinteria local and president of Vietnam Veterans Chapter 218, Peter Bie, will lead a panel discussion with Vietnam Veterans and members of the Vietnamese community about the last days in Vietnam.

This talk will reflect on the legacy of the Vietnam War and include personal remembrances of the war period.

Why Do We Need to Protect the Native Habitats of Carpinteria?

Talk by Dale Olivas

Carpinteria has a unique climate, natural plant and animal habitats, and a history of individuals dedicated to preserving natural resources. Olivas’s talk will include a wide-ranging discussion of plants, animals, groves, nesting, and the importance of Carpinteria habitat protection.
